Southwest Archaeology Experience

Geez…what a great five days for us! We met so many people, learned about the world of archeology, and actually walked in the steps of so many that have come before us. I had a great trip back, as the guys slept! Every once in awhile someone would wake up, make a comment about an experience, and then we’d chat some more about what we did & what it meant. Thanks so much to everyone that made this happen. The guys plan to put an exploratory trip together in this area for our students and families using the Youth Summit approach and resources. We’ll keep you informed.

Youth Summit to me was above and beyond what I had expected it to be. I thought it was going to be filled with boring speeches and lectures. But it wasn’t it really reached out and grasped my attention. With all the hands on experiences it has made me respect the native cultures of these land and how the lived. The best part of all this to me was giving the parks people ideas on how to better the experience for the public by doing little skits. This was an experience that will stay with me the rest of my life. I would also like to thank all the people that set this up for giving me such a great experience.

Youth Summit was awesome!

My favorite part of the Youth Summit was going to Balcony House because it truly showed the native peoples daring and what they had to do. It was fun climbing the 30 foot ladder (looking back on it: not so fun when I was doing it) and the steep mountain. Just seeing the houses they built that could be considered pretty good sized modern buildings in the middle of a cliff out of stone was really impressive. It seemed even more impressive when you realized how innovative these people were fixing their mistakes and somehow managing to bring down those huge bricks without machinery. Some other things that were pretty fun was the Pow Wow dances, although I didn’t really find the dancing that impressive. It was still fun to watch and admire the singer singing at a pitch that would make my lungs collapse. The museum was also fun especially the Decisions, Decisions activity (the oil company had the rights . The final thing I’d like to mention that was fun DURING the Youth Summit was the play (I was thinking I was a total retard, but apparently people liked the chipmunk idea). Finally before and after the Youth Summit we had a lot of fun with Mrs. P on the car ride (there are probably 4000 stories we could tell about the rides, especially about the Flarpp). The most important thing it taught me was to be a “stewart for preservation”, although since I hate how that sounds I’ll say it taught me to respect our older cultures who lived here and to spread that love of wanting to see what they did and also the respect I have for them!

The Youth Summit so great! It was my first time going and I learned a lot of new things that will help with my future. All of the activities we did with the partners were great and I loved the balcony house tour! I hope I can go again next year.

The Youth Summit was amazing. I loved all the activities we got to do and all the places we got to see. By far my favorite thing was the balcony house tour. The view was breathtaking and it will be an experience I will remember for a long time

Everything was really neat about this trip. The Crow Canyon part was espeicailly fun with all the teachers and extra sleeping time.Even though we had a curfew and all, the experience was still great. After we had climbed the 32 feet latter and went through the tunnel the whole veiw at the top of Balcony House was pretty bad. Even at the place we stayed at had a sick view too. This whole trip was really cool and I would enjoy to go back any day.

It was pretty cool i guess. we didn’t do much archeoligy stuff tho. imean besides the indian stuff…but that was it.
